ITALY - CNL REPRINTS

Towards the end of the Second World War, the Italians were fed up with both the War and the German forces in Italy. The Allied invasion was welcomed by most, and local committees - CLN’s (Committees for National Liberation) - were formed to aid the Allies as the Germans were slowly driven from Italy. As areas were liberated, the local committees created their own stamps by overprinting stamps of Mussolini’s Italian
Social Republic with “CLN” and frequently patriotic slogans, for example “Florence Welcomes the Allies” (in English, no less). Some of these locals met legitimate and desperate needs for postage, while many were philatelically inspired. Most were printed in small quantities and are scarce, and forged overprints on ISR stamps exist.
